Yugoslav Armies 1941-45

...Men-at-Arms 542, from Osprey Publishing

Title: Yugoslav Armies 1941-45
Author: Nigel Thomas & Dusan Babac
Publisher: Osprey Publishing
ISBN: 978-1-4728-4203-9

A new title in the Men-at-Arms series, which reaches number 542 with this new 48-page soft-cover book.
The Introduction sets the scene rather neatly, the complexity of the make-up of Yugoslavia, and its' domination by Serbia. There is then even more detail in the rest of the book, with the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the Royal Army which initially supported the Axis powers but was then overthrown by supporters of the Allies. The mix then has the complexities of the various separate nations that now make up the individual states that once were Yugoslavia. That resulted in a German invasion. Then add to that the Royalist Chetniks (under Tito) as well as the Communist Partisans, all of whom make for a complex mix of interests along with influences from their different supporters. So there are unit organisation charts and descriptions as well as the outlines of events that took place during the periods of the war. Throughout all of that we get detailed descriptions and tables of ranks and their various badges. The heart of the book for many will be the 8-pages of lovely colour uniform artwork, 3 figures to each page. Each one is later described in detail in the Plate Commentaries at the end of the book.
For me these Men-at-Arms books from Osprey mark out the reputation of Osprey for their consistent coverage and excellent artwork illustrating the uniforms and equipment of many nations over so many years of military conflict. The detail in the text all adds to the high quality artwork, which in this instance was done beautifully by Johnny Shumate. Always easy to recommend and this is no exception.
Thanks to Osprey for the review copy.
