We have reached number 7 in this series of Through the Lens books from PeKo publishing, and another by author Tom Cockle. A 123-page hard-cover book, and with a teaser at the end that number 8 is in preparation for us to look forward to.
This one is split across 6 sections, and these feature the Pz38(t), Pz III Ausf L, Pz IV Ausf H, Stug III Ausf F and F/8, the KV-1 and finally, Wehrmacht Omnibuses. Each page is filled by just one photo, plus informative captions to tell us about each one. Many are individual images while some feature a short series of images of the same scene, but from different angles. The result of each photo being reproduced at such a large size means we get to see a lot of detail that might otherwise be missed if they were smaller. Just to pick some examples, Pz 38(t) hit in the turret to great effect and popping some of the rivets of the turrets' construction. In the section on Pz IV Ausf H, two on rail cars but one where even the rail car has buckled, and which suggests a great model diorama. As for the KV-1, a variety of turrets are to be seen in the selection we are shown. My personal favourite in this one though is the final section, on the variety of buses used by the Wehrmacht in WW2. Examples built by Opel, Magirus, Mercedes, Vomag, Bussing-Nag and more.
Another excellent addition to this series, and with a great selection of archive images which I don't remember seeing before, while just a small number were familiar. Even after all the years I have been interested in wartime vehicles, I am still surprised at the number of new photographs which are still being presented to us. As a lifelong armour modeller, these books continue to provide some great references. Definitely recommended.
Thanks to PeKo Publishing for the review copy.
