Title: WW2 Abandoned Places
Author: Michael Kerrigan
Publisher: Amber Books
ISBN: 978-1-78274-549-5
Following on from reviewing a recent release of their book on Cold War Abandoned Places, I was keen to see this slightly earlier publication from Amber Books which looks at Abandoned Places of WW2. I must immediately say I was not disappointed.
It is 75 years since the end of WW2 and it is surprising just how many reminders of places and events of WW2 which still remain to be seen in situ. This 224-page hardback book presents over 120 places around the world where those remains can still be found. It is organised into sections which divide them by geography. After an Introduction it covers Germany & Ventral Europe: Eastern Europe: Mediterranear, Africa & Middle East: North America: Far East & the Pacific: Great Britain & Ireland: France & the Low Countries: and finally, Scandinavia. Printed on a good quality paper, the modern colour photos are first class and fascinating to see.
I'll not attempt to mention all the different locations but would mention a few just to try and give a flavour of what you can find in here. There are some well known locations, such as the Longues sur Mer battery in Normandy, the submarine pens at Lorient and St. Nazaire, and the ruined village of Oradour-sur-Glane now kept as a memorial. There are the huge Flak Towers in Hamburg and Berlin, bunkers and tunnels on the Czech border, rusting vehicles in the Pacific and North Africa, sunken submarines and cargo ships in the Mediterranean and crashed aircraft in the Pacific jungle and on a mountainside in Sweden.
An excellent collection of sites, some well known and others less so. A good mix and plenty of inspiration for places you might like to visit for yourself.
Thanks to Amber Books for this copy.
