Number 29 in the Latin America @ War series from Helion & Co and the story of the US led invasion of Grenada in 1983. An 82-page soft-cover book which tells us the story of not only the short 4-day operation, but which expands on it with the wider background which led to the situation where the USA felt it necessary to stage Urgent Fury, publicly to protect American students in danger on the island.
Only a small island, but Grenada is one of the Caribbean islands which waited many years for independence from the UK. That background, the control by Premier Eric Gairy, who despite leading a communist group was taking lots of money for his own benefit. Once he was replaced, a new leader was then ousted by a coup which ended in his violent death. The new group was not popular and was finally removed by the US invasion in 1983. There is all the detail behind these stories, and of course the 4-day operation of Urgent Fury which is detailed. A slightly different picture of the Cuban involvement than I had imagined and a summary of what happened after the operation, which put Grenada back onto its' feet.
Much more detail than the simple story of the 4-days of Urgent Fury itself, and I found it an interesting read. There are plenty of archive photos to illustrate the story throughout, along with the usual group of pages with colour maps and equipment profiles in the middle of the book. Another good addition to the series in my view.
Thanks to Helion & Co for the review copy.
