Number 118 in their Duel series, 2 classic tanks of the Normandy campaign are compared. An 80-page soft-cover book in the standard style, with plenty of archive images, artwork and maps all included.
The Introduction that starts things off sets an interesting scene. Two heavily armoured tanks developed at around the same time, and with less than auspicious starts to their combat careers. Next we are taken through the Design & Development story of both tanks, before reaching the Strategic Situation in 1944, when the campaign in NW Europe was set to begin. Then the Technical Specifications of each tank, splitting the elements across Firepower, Protection and Mobility. The story isn't just devoted to the machines however, but also the men who made up their crews. This includes some of the personalities, both Allied and German, along with the organisation of Churchill Regiments and Tiger Battalions. This in turn leads to an examination of their performance in Combat. This includes aspects such as Infantry Support & Cooperation as well as the Repair & Recovery organisations. That all takes us into the final two sections, with Statistics & Analysis and a final Conclusion. As is explained in the text, there are plenty of challenges in making some of the comparisons.
The gun on the Tiger was obviously the more powerful, but when you read all the many aspects of this comparison, I found it made for some interesting reading. I am sure that will be the case for many others interested in the story of these Tanks in combat in the WW2 campaign in N W Europe.
Thanks to Osprey for our review copy.
