A new edition of the quarterly 'The Weathering Aircraft Magazine' from Ammo covers the topic of reproducing wood on your models. A high quality paper magazine, packed with different features and techniques, filling 62 pages with plenty of good ideas.
A variety of modellers have each contributed a marvellous set of articles, illustrated with a series of high quality photos of high quality models and simple, clear step by step notes. There are 8 separate articles, and they cover the use of decals and a variety of Ammo products to represent wood of different types. The subjects for these include wooden accessories, with WW1 propellers and workbenches, three WW1 aircraft, Albatros W4 seaplane, Albatros D.VA and Albatros B.II Y D.V.. Then 3 WW2 subjects, the Fieseler Fi.103 (a V1, which had wooden wings), a Sturmovik I L2-M3 and the Me 163B Komet. Pretty much all bases are covered, with some using an airbrush, others just using brushes, and using wood grain decals, oil paints, shading, masking and weathering effects and so much more. I found a lot to learn and try out in this one.
One of the things I like about this is that here we have a collection of first class modellers who are happily sharing their tips and techniques with the rest of us. There have been occasions over the years I have come across a few modellers who do something special, and if you ask them how they did it, won't tell you because it is their 'secret'. As someone who has always been keen to share knowledge with other modellers then I have never understood that. Hence why I am so pleased to see a group of modellers who are happy to share their skills with the rest of us in such as clear way. OK, I know it also showcases how to get the best from Ammo products as well, but as they are clearly the publishers, I don't think that should be a surprise and indeed a useful guide for their many customers around the world. Wood is an interesting challenge on models, and there are some great effects in here that many of us will learn a lot from. Aimed at aircraft models but I feel this would be just as useful for diorama modellers as well. Recommended.
Thanks to Ammo for our example.
