Title: Tanks in the Gulf War 1991
Author: Steven J. Zaloga
Publisher: Osprey
ISBN: 978-1-4728-6475-8
New Vanguard 337 from Osprey. A 48-page soft-cover book, and with artwork from Felipe Rodriguez Nanez.
After a brief introduction, this one is split across 3 main sections, covering Doctrine & Organisation, Technical Factors and The Campaign, with each of these split into sub-sections. They cover the Iraqi army, as well as the US, British, French and Saudi-Arabian coalition forces as well as detail on the various types of tanks employed by the different elements. With figures of some 5,000 tanks on each side of the war, the tank battles were the largest engagements since WW2. When it gets to the Campaign, there is the Iraqi assault on Khafji and its' subsequent defeat before the allied assault was launched to free Kuwait. It includes the importance of allied air support in knocking out large number of Iraqi AFVs and the subsequent damage to Iraqi morale. The main campaign achieved success in just 100 hours and the main events are covered. This all leads us to Steve's Battle Analysis.
Throughout the book there are plenty of archive photos supporting the text, plus some first class colour profiles, and a double-page battle scene, from illustrator Felipe. The author is a well known expert on armour from WW2 to the present day, and this new book makes for interesting reading. Information on Iraqi armour markings from the time will be popular with modellers. A relatively small book, but packed with great material which offers great value for money in my view. One thing I still find surprising is that this short war happened over 30 years ago now!
Thanks to Osprey for the review copy.
