Title: Spotlight On 28, Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX vol 1
Author: Robert Grudzien
Publisher: MMP
ISBN: 978-83-67227-41-4
Number 28 in this Spotlight On series from MMP Books, a 41-page hard-cover book.
The Spitfire IX was based on the earlier Mk V, but fitted with a more powerful Merlin 61 engine. It required some minor changes to manage the new power unit but went into production, with several thousands of the Mk IX being built. After a brief introduction, the rest of the book is filled with an excellent set of colour profiles, and illustrating a fine variety of camouflage schemes and specific squadron markings. Colours include Ocean Grey/Green/and Medium Sea Grey undersides, as well as desert camouflage, PRU Pink, bare metal and a couple of other variants, including a Russian two-seater. Even MJ892, a prototype floatplane is included. Every one has a detailed caption telling us the detail of the specific subject.
The author is working on a project to prepare a set of profiles covering every Spitfire operated by the Polish Air Force. In the meantime, this is a lovely set of colour profiles, illustrating a wide variety of users of the Mk IX and offers some good inspiration/ideas for the keen Spitfire modeller. For aircraft enthusiasts generally, and there are many lovers of the Spitfire, I have no doubt you will enjoy this one.
