Soviet Machine Guns of World War II

...Weapon 81, from Osprey Publishing

Title: Soviet Machine Guns of World War II
Author: Chris McNab
Publisher: Osprey Publishing
ISBN: 978-1-4728-4239-8

A new addition to the Weapon series from Osprey, number 81 in the series. An 80-page softcover book in the standard style for the series.
Following an introduction, the book is split across 4 main sections. These cover the Development of the 3 main weapons that feature in the book, along with their Use and Impact, rounded off by a Conclusion. The designers include Tokarev, Degtyaryov and Goryunov and it goes on to give the detail of the Maxim 1910, the DP light machine gun and the DShKM heavy machine gun. The SG-43 is also featured. The text is accompanied not only by archive photos and fine colour artwork, but that artwork, by Steve Noon, includes some excellent cut-away drawings of each of the guns. With the notes in their use, it does include not only infantry combat, but their use in Anti-Aircraft mounts as well.
The book makes for interesting reading, plus it is well illustrated. One of the aspects of all three that I can give a good account of is their weight, as I do have (deactivated) examples of all three. The 2 heavy machine guns both live up to their classification! A useful guide and good value for money, easy to recommend.
Thanks to Osprey for our review copy.
