'Volume 2: The 1955 Coup that Overthrew President Peron', number 33 in the Latin America @ War series of books from Helion & Co. A 64-page soft-cover book.
This is a detailed account of the revolution which saw the overthrow of Peron, the President of Argentina. It provides the background including a daily account of what happened, as a combination of rebels amidst the Argentine military carried out a successful revolution. This all took place in September 1955, and Peron finally had to take refuge in the Paraguayan Embassy, plus his journey out to exile in Paraguay itself, along with subsequent moves, He was able to return to Argentina, and to the position of President in 1972, but he was ill and he died in the summer of 1974, His wife took over from him, but that lasted a short time before there was a return to a military junta, until democratic elections were held once more in 1983. It even includes mention of how the Peron government provided a safe haven after the war for a number of key Nazi exiles from Germany after WW2.
The rule of President Peron clearly split the country of Argentina into very opposite sides, and the book sets out the detail of how and why the revolution took place. In the story of the 1955 revolution we see the names and units of the important members of the revolution, while the archive images show the wide variety of aircraft, warships, tanks and so on which took part, Most are WW2 machines which many will recognise, and which include the Belgrano, later sunk during the Falklands War in 1982. Also the aircraft carrier, ARA 25 de Mayo, originally the Royal Navy's HMS Venerable. Aircraft included Dakotas, Meteors and many others, as well as the section of colour artwork profiles and maps which are a common feature of this series. I found this to be interesting reading, as while I knew of Peron as well as the detail of the Falklands War, I knew little of the internal history of Argentina which is set out in this book. Another good addition to the series I think.
Thanks to Helion & Co for the review copy.
