World War Two Aircraft Return to the Skies, a landscape format 128-page soft-cover book from Key Publishing. As the sub-title tells us, this is about restored WW2 aircraft, restored to flight condition and flown in commemoration of those who flew them during WW2.
With 26 chapters, it open with an introduction that tells us about the photography of these marvellous restored aircraft. A lot of money is invested in them to bring them back to a factory fresh, flyable condition, so they can be flown at air shows which attract so many thousands of visitors around the world each year. The remaining 25 chapters each deals with a specific aircraft, giving us the story of the individual airframe, the markings it is flown in and a link to their specific website where you can find out even more. Every chapter involves some simply superb colour photos of each aircraft in flight. There are some you will expect, with Spitfire, Mustang, B-17, Dakota, Liberator, a rare Zero and many more. These include less well known types such as the Expeditor and the Valiant. The saddest element unfortunately now, is that it includes both the P-63 King Cobra and B-17 Texas Raiders, which collided at the very recent Dallas Air Display, with great loss of life between both aircraft. A very sad risk of flying, however well maintained these old aircraft are.
A great selection of subjects and some very fine photography. There are thousands of 'warbirds' fans around the world, and all will like what you will find in this book, even if it is tinged with sadness over the recent crash. Some great memories in here though, including for the P-63 and Texas Raiders.
Thanks to Pen & Sword for the review copy, and who are now distributing the Key Publishing range of books.
