The latest addition to the popular series of Panzerwrecks books is the second one that focusses on the Battle of the Bulge. A 128-page landscape format soft-cover book.
While there are a few subjects in here which have been seen in earlier books in the Panzerwrecks series (and noted as such) it features additional pictures of these vehicles, showing them either from different angles or at different times, in the years following the war. Some of them with sections removed as the scrapman gradually took them apart, and this reveals yet more internal details. A good number have been collected from family snaps after the war, with families sitting on the wrecks which were left in their neighbourhoods. A wide variety of vehicle types, opening with steel-wheeled Panthers, and a nice set of one of the Stug IIIs which were painted in Olive Drab and given fake US markings. There are other Stugs and Panthers, along with more Panthers, Panzer IVs and Tigers, including one recovered by US forces and then left outside Spa railway station. Add Jagdpanzer IVs, Hetzers, Jagdpanthers, plus plenty of half-track types, including the sWS, Sdkfz 11, Sdkfz 251 variants and the smaller Sdkfz 250 types. A few other odds and bobs but once again a super collection of photos. Also included once again are 6 super colour artwork illustrations from Filipe Rodna, and these are placed beside the black and white archive photos they are replicating in colour.
As ever, this series means a selection of rare images accompanied by informative captioning. Some of them include a QR code which you can scan and it links to a map showing the precise location of the wreck where the photo was taken. They are sourced from a mix of sources which are all listed in the front of the book, and many come from the collection of a well know armour enthusiast, Stefan De Mayer, who sadly passed away back in 2016, and for whom they have included a biography inside the back cover. As a huge fan of this series I have no hesitation in recommending this new addition, and as a modeller, I love the extra details you can find in here, along with plenty of inspiration/ideas for models and dioramas alike.
Thanks to Panzerwrecks for the review copy.
