Title: Panzergrenadier
Author: Thomas Anderson
Publisher: Osprey
ISBN: 978-1-4728-4179-7
Another great addition to this series of books from Thomas Anderson and Osprey, this time tackling the subject of the Panzergrenadiers, the motorised infantry units that were a vital accompaniment to the panzers themselves. A 304-page hardcover book packed with original archive images, organisation charts, background information and history.
The basic organisation of the book follows on from the introduction with a simple chronological sequence. In the 1930s, as the Panzer force was under development, it was realised that they would need riflemen/infantry to accompany them to consolidate the ground and provide defence for the armoured units. So they were motorised, initially in trucks, such as the Krupp Protze, the larger Einheitsdeisel, personnel cars such as the Horsch, Steyr and Mercedes and the start of the armoured personnel carrier, the Sdkfz 250 and 251 half-tracks. Then on through the years from 1939 through to 1944. There are personal accounts of individual experiences, along with the challenges the units faced. It includes plenty of unit organisation charts over the years, and some great detail on the many specialised variants on both the light and medium half-track series. Accompanied by hundreds of archive photos.
Not only is it simply fascinating reading, but the detailed information on changing equipment and unit structures, along with the assortment of armament they carried. As someone who has been interested in WW2 armoured vehicles for many years now, I am always impressed by the way the author manages to find so many excellent photos that I have not seen published before. As a modeller, the detail contained in here is invaluable. Highly recommended.
Thanks to Osprey for our review copy.
