Allied Bombers: RAAF Beauforts and Beaufighters 1942-1945, from author Kevin Gogler and the artwork by Michael Claringbould. A 120-page soft-cover book.
A recent addition to this excellent series of Pacific Profile books, and this time focussing on 2 British aircraft types, but with most examples of which were built in Australia along with their service with the RAAF. After an introduction the first 3 chapters cover the general background to the two aircraft, their construction in Australia and one that will be favourite with modellers, chapter 3 is devoted to the detail of camouflage colours and markings, even including the various wing stencils. Then we get into the many individual squadrons, with their basic service history and throughout the book, a total of 89 fine colour profiles which illustrate the various types and often their nose art as well plus plenty of archive photos. There are 9 individual squadron chapters, with others grouped together in Eastern Australia and Northern Australia Beaufort squadrons, plus others on the late Beaufighter squadrons, training units, 'other' units, Post-War service and finally on Disposals & Survivors.
For the aviation enthusiast there is lots of great detail in here on these 2 types in RAAF service, while for the modeller the colour profiles and detail on their markings will be a real boon. There is much to learn, and I for one didn't know that some Beauforts were converted into Beaufreighters in the later stages of the war and there were bright yellow schemes on Beaufighters after the war when some were allocated to target tug duties. Another excellent addition to this series I think.
Thanks to UK distributor Script Books for the review copy.
