Title: Pacific Profiles, Volume 9
Author: Michael John Claringbould
Publisher: Avonmore Books
ISBN: 978-0-645-24697-1
We have got as far as volume 9 of this excellent series by author Michael Claringbould, this one covers specifically the P-38 series of fighters operating in the South & Southwest Pacific in the period 1942-1944. A 124-pages soft-cover book detailing more fine profiles of aircraft serving in the Pacific during WW2.
An introduction sets the scene rather neatly, and then there are 23 chapters which take us through all the P-38 equipped units in the region during this period of the war. They include Fighter Squadrons, with names such as the 'Dirty Dozen', the 'Headhunters' and the 'Sunsetters' among others, as well as other Night Fighter and Reconnaissance squadrons. It is rounded off with inclusion of 5th Fighter Command Headquarters and lastly some Unusual Lightnings. It provides a basic history of each unit. Each one is accompanied with a series of fine colour profiles, which show the variety of colours, markings and noseart to be found among the different units. There are also plenty of archive photos spread throughout the book. A lot to inspire modellers and interest aviation history enthusiasts alike.
Another addition to this series from author Michael Claringbould focussing on the Pacific War theatre of operations. Information taken from squadron records, photos, and a lot of personal research by the author including wreck inspections. Another really useful and interesting addition to a reference shelf.
Thanks to the distributors, Casemate, for our review copy.
