Norway 1940

...The Luftwaffe's Scandinavian Blitzkrieg, from Osprey Publishing

Title: Norway 1940
Author: James S. Corum
Publisher: Osprey
ISBN: 978-1-4728-4745-4

This is number 22 in the Air Campaign series from Osprey, a 96-page soft-cover book. Interesting text as usual, backed up with archive images along with maps and some fine artwork by Graham Turner.
The Introduction sets the scene, and that is followed with a well detailed Chronology of events from 10 October 1939 through to 10 June 1940, when the surrender was complete. Next come assessments of both the Attacker's and the Defender's Capabilities. Next come the Campaign Objectives of both sides, including the UK, and then the story of the Campaign itself. All rounded off with an interesting analysis of the campaign itself.
I had a basic knowledge of the campaign but this has added a lot to that. The detail of the capabilities of all sides, including Germany, Denmark, Norway, the UK and France are all there. Much of the operation depended on naval forces, both surface and submarine units. The importance of air force support for both sides, and especially the strong and weak points of the naval air arms played a vital part in the campaign. Bomber Command and the Fleet Air Arm were all involved, along with the seaplane transports of the Luftwaffe as well. The capabilities of the RAF at the start of the war were a significant contrast to what they could achieve later on. An interesting book and as ever very good value for money.
Thanks to Osprey for the review copy.
