Fernnachtjagd Units 1940-1944, from Air World, an imprint of Pen & Sword. A 211-page hard-cover book.
This is the story of the long range night fighter missions of the Luftwaffe in WW2, split over 4 chapters which reflect the operations of these units over the course of the war. It started quite early in the war, with a specific unit, II/NJG 1, formed in July 1940 and operated from Gilze-Rijen in Holland. Primary equipment was the Ju 88, and while they remained active until late 1941. There is great detail of the missions, aircraft, their victims and the aircrew from both sides that were involved. The next chapter deals with a stopgap alternative, with operations using Dornier Do 17 equipped units, while the third section sees the use of the Me 210, before the final section, the final Fernnachtjager operating 1943-1944 and operations with the improved Me 410. It is all rounded off with an Epilogue that rounds off the story, and includes a few missions that were undertaken in 1945. The book is closed though with no less than 16 appendices, giving multiple lists and tables with lots more detail.
Profusely illustrated throughout, the results of their effort is questionable, though the author has once again demonstrated his knowledge of the subject of Luftwaffe operations in WW2. We discover that there were plenty of instances of success and failures, of mis-identification of enemy aircraft at night and of claims which cannot be tied to records of losses. Both RAF and USAAF aircraft were targeted by these intruders, and carrying bombs, they could also carry out nuisance raids on airfields and towns/cities during their patrols. Another excellent book from author Chris Goss.
Thanks to Pen & Sword for the review copy.
