Number 1 in the Classic Vehicle Series from Key Publishing, I think it is quite suitable that it should tackle the Land Rover Series 1 for the subject. A 96-page, small format soft-cover book, packed with photos as is common with these Key Publishing books.
Spread over an Introduction and then 5 chapters, we get a very good look at all the details and then many variations to be found on this classic off-roader. The Series 1 was built from 1948 through to 1958. In that time it was built in no less than 5 different chassis sizes, 80in, 86 and 88in and then the long wheelbase 107 and 110in. These different sizes steer the first 3 chapters, leaving the last 2 to showcase Working Land Rovers and finally the many that still form the popular club for series 1 Land Rover owners. They were quite basic 4x4 workhorses, and they quickly proved popular. Over 100,000 were built in the first 6 years of production, and they sold well around the world. Today there is even a business in restoring them to as good as, or even better than, as new condition. The collection of photos illustrate a great selection of them in all shapes and sizes, and with a variety of bodywork between them all. They were used by royalty, the military, farmers and anyone else who found a uses for a rough terrain vehicle, even if it is just for the fun of it. It does also include the licence built version by Minerva, in Belgium and the insulated bodies built in Sweden. Some have winches and there is one example showing the PTO (Power Take-Off) to drive a belt to drive woodworking machinery.
The Land Rover was a great British success story and this is a great picture of the first ones that established that world class reputation. Interesting reading in the page that starts each chapter and there is even more in the captions for the many photos. For the many Land Rover enthusiasts out there, as well as those with an interest in British motoring history there is plenty to enjoy in here.
