Title: Hueys Over Khe Sanh
Author: Peter Greene
Publisher: Casemate

'Missions with VMO-6', the story of the author's time as a US Marine gunship helicopter Crew Chief, serving in the Vietnam War. A 184-page hard-cover book.
Born in 1945, the author tells us of his early years, and his enlistment in the USMC. After Boot Camp and basic infantry training, he went on to specialise in aviation engineering and found himself very quickly posted to SE Asia, or in other words, into the Vietnam War. He was posted to the Marine unit, VMO-6, and gives the helpful explanation for may of us, that V= heavier than Air: M= Marine: and O= Observation, a squadron equipped with the famous Huey helicopters, and he was specifically on the UH-1E gunships. After a time learning the ropes, he was appointed as a Crew Chief, assigned to his own helicopter. I hadn't realised that while the Crew Chief was responsible for a particular helicopter, the pilot and remainder of the crew could change on a daily basis. It tells us of his experiences, often flying in the border areas of South and North Vietnam and Laos. Well known bases from Ky Ha, and later Khe Sahn. Missions varied, with support of Marine units, of MACV Special Forces, escort for Medivacs and supply missions. A wide variety of combat experience for this corporal during his 13 month deployment.
I am sure this will be of interest to anyone wishing to read about the soldiers' combat experience at the height of the Vietnam Warm and of course just how these Huey gunships were like to operate and fight in. It does also include things like their base living conditions and more, such as how to manage your feeling when fuel and ammunition ran out and the crew had to leave a situation and never did find out what happened to those they were trying to help. Not the view of high command and decision making, but a combat marine who had to cope with getting the experience of a US Marine in the Vietnam War. A good read.
