Title: Hitler's Headquarters in the West Then and Now
Author: Jean Paul Pallud
Publisher: After the Battle
ISBN: 978-1-03610-133-6
A new Then & Now book from After the Battle Publications, now a part of Pen & Sword. A 208-page hard-cover book.
Parts of this book were originally published in 4 issues of After the Battle magazine, in August 1975, November 1977, August 2010 and May 2018. These have been expanded upon and a lot more added to cover additional sites plus an additional 150 photos. The headquarters sites covered include the Berghof at Berchtesgarden, the Fuhrersonderzug (Hitler's train), then headquarters used during the Blitzkrieg in the West, in the Balkans, along with sites used over 1941-1943 plus Wolfsschlucht 2 and 3, 2 more that were built but never used (Hagen and Zigeuner) and Adlerhorst which was used during the Ardennes offensive. All have details of the individual sites plus the archive and modern photos that are the hallmark of the After the Battle series. There is also a section at the back with a selection of colour images of the various Fuhrer Hauptquartier. All the photos have the extensive captions we expect, which add even more to the basic text of each chapter.
The number of sites used by the Fuhrer during the war is impressive, some of which he never actually used. In all there is some fascinating material in here, and along with some well known archive photos, many more which are new to me. While some sites have been demolished, it is perhaps surprising just how much on many of them remain, and most can be visited. A total of 16 sites were built, with this book covering those in the West (including his train) while those in the East are set to be covered by a second book, yet to be released. The author, Jean Paul Pallud, has made an excellent job of this one, as he has done so many times for After the Battle over the years, and this one will not disappoint.
Thanks to After the Battle/Pen & Sword for the review copy.
