Title: German Self-Propelled Anti-Tank and Anti-Aircraft guns 1939-1945
Author: Ian Baxter
Publisher: Pen & Sword
ISBN: 978-1-03610-060-5
Another in the Images of War series from Pen & Sword, a 108-page soft-cover book from author Ian Baxter.
The book is split across 4 chapters, each one with a few pages of text, and then a set of appropriate archive photos. The Blitzkrieg campaign against France and the Low Countries are the starting pint, as the extra mobility of both anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons became necessary to support the new fast moving campaigns. Chapter 2 considers the First Generation of new weapons from 1941-43 with the start of the assault on Russia, and the vast distances involved. Then there were more Stopgap Solutions between 1943-44, such as the multiple Marder variants, before the Second Generation of equipment covering 1944-45. Larger anti-tank guns and purpose built AFVs such as the Jagdpanther, Jagdtiger and Hetzer, along with better protected anti-aircraft platforms like the Mobelwagen and Ostwind.
A good selection of archive images, most of which I had not seen before, with plenty of useful references for modellers and AFV enthusiasts. My only disappointment was in the number of errors in vehicle identification in the captions, spread throughout the book. I can understand a few as I am not beyond making mistakes myself but I was surprised at the number of them, especially when the same vehicle is correctly identified in other pictures in the book. There was also one photo that was repeated on 2 separate pages, yet with different captions, one right and one not. All the same, a useful selection of archive images to have as a reference on the subject.
Thanks to Pen & Sword for the review copy.
