Fairchild A-10A Thunderbolt II

...Colour & Scale 08 from MMP Books

Title: Fairchild A-10A Thunderbolt II
Author: Slawomir Zajaczkowski
Publisher: MMP Books
ISBN: 978-83-67227-79-7

Number 8 in the Colour & Scale series from MMP Books, and covering the US A-10 ground attack aircraft, the Thunderbolt II. A 16-page soft-cover book.
This one opens with 5 pages of 1/72nd scale plans and then there are a series of very nice colour profiles illustrating an interesting variety of colour schemes on the A-10. For three specific aircraft there are complete colour illustrations with both side profiles plus upper and lower surface views. These include the spotty 'Jaws' pattern and a snow pattern which is rarely seen. Brief notes are provided for each one, telling us the unit and circumstances of the colour scheme, all in English, though the last page of the book does have them repeated in Polish.
The A-10 first flew in 1972, 53 years ago, entered service in 1977, and is still in frontline service with the USAF to this day. A purpose designed CAS (Close Air Support) aircraft, with plenty of unusual features, let along the mighty 30mm rotary cannon offset in the nose. I still find it hard to realise that the A-10 has been in service for almost 50 years, and so far without any direct replacement in sight. Clearly targeted to modellers, there are certainly some really nice colour schemes in here to tempt you.
Thanks to the UK distributors Script Books for the review copy.
