The first in a new series from Kagero, Kit Build 1. The subject is one of my personal favourite aircraft, the F-14 Tomcat, so well known thanks to the film Top Gun. A 66-page softcover book which details 2 different builds, one for the 1/48 Tamiya kit, and the other a 1/72 model by FineMolds.
The first model is finished in what I would call a quite classic US Navy colour scheme. The second is another US Navy machine, but this time in use at NSAWC with a multi-colour camouflage scheme that simulates the multi-colour camouflage used by the F-14s of the Iranian military, but with US markings. Quite different to the pale greys we usually see. In both cases there is text which sets the scene and describes the build, but the bulk of the information us held in the helpful captioning to each of the many, high quality photos which illustrate both builds. There are some modifications included, but both models do actually have a good level of detail in the base kits. I have to say that both models are beautifully finished and there are plenty of useful tips to be gained from them. The other comment to make is to compliment both modellers on the mix of paints and materials they have used, from a wide variety of manufacturers. So often we see books which show a fine build, but with clear promotional use of materials from a particular supplier. These are very varied, including Tamiya, Alclad, AK Interactive, Vallejo, Ammo of Mig Jiminez, Mr Hobby and more. The only down side I can imagine is that many modellers may not have such am extensive collection of paints and accessories/tools and it is possible that this can have a slightly negative impact on those who don't have such a wide selection available, or indeed if they can afford such a comprehensive workbench. That is a minor point though, because the quality of the builds and the presentation is first class and will be inspirational for many.
Other points are that the book is presented with text in both English and Polish languages throughout and has a good selection of colour profiles in the last few pages. The other important bonus within the book, is the inclusion of a set of water-slide transfers for you to use on your own models, one set in 1/48 and repeated in 1/72. This is an excellent start ot a new series from Kagero, and if they continue to be as good as this one, sure to be popular.
