The Somme 1916, Beyond the First Day
...A new Visitor's Guide, from Pen & Sword
Title: The Somme 1916, Beyond the First Day
Author: Jon Cooksey & Jerry Murland
Publisher: Pen & Sword
This new Visitor's Guide is a companion to the earlier title, 'The First Day of the Somme' and the eighth in a series of guides from the same authors. The Introduction also includes a tribute to Jon Cooksey, who passed away while the book was being prepared for publication. A small format book which is handy enough to keep in a jacket pocket, ideal for the battlefield visitor who will most likely make best use of the guide.
Well illustrated throughout, including detail maps and photos both old and new, the text gives a detailed guide for eight different tours, some suitable for walking and some for driving. They give detail on secondary battles which made up key stages in the fighting on the Somme during 1916. They include places such as Mametz, Deville and High Woods, along with Pozieres and Flers. Each one gives clear directions, tells you what happened at various points of the individual battles, the stories of people involved and what to look out for that is still to be seen to this day.
I am a huge fan of these battlefield guides, prepared by knowledgable authors who knioow their subject, but which allow for the individual battlefield visitor to make their own schedule and devote the time to their own specific interest rather than being confined by the schedule of a guided tour. Excellent value for money and a really well prepared guide.
