Soviet Armoured Cars 1936-45
...New Vanguard 284 from Osprey Publishing
Title: Soviet Armoured Cars 1936-1945
Author: Jamie Prenatt
Publisher: Osprey Publishing
New Vanguard 284 takes on the subject of Soviet armoured cars from WW2 and the pre-war period. A 48-page softcover book with informative text, archive photos, colour artwork including a lovely cutaway image of the BA-6 armoured car.
There are 5 sections, starting with Early Developments, featuring the various types used in WW1 and the period immediately following the end of that war. There are some well known types, such as the 6x4 BA-3,-6 and -10, along with the 4-wheel BA-20 and BA-64 there are also a number of lesser known types and specialised cars. Among the usual artwork we'd expect from Osprey, it includes a good cutaway drawing of the BA-6 and of course plenty of archive images. As well as covering the development of armoured cars in Russia and the assortment of types, the book goes on to cover the various theatres of combat they played a part in. This is not just the Eastern Front battles against Germany, but also the Spanish Civil War, the Winter War with Finland and against the Japanese in Manchuria at the Battle of Khalkhin Gol. A short Epilogue and Bibliography round things off.
This is a handy reference to the subject of wartime Soviet armoured cars and handy not only for those interested in the history of armoured vehicles in WW2 but an equally handy reference for modellers as well. Another good addition to the New Vanguard series.
Thanks to Osprey for our review copy.
