Title: COIN Operations in Paraguay
Author: Antonio Luis Sapienza

Dirty Little Wars 1956-1980, which is no.21 in the Latin America @ War series from Helion & Co. Let me say from the outset that I knew nothing of the history of Paraguay at the outset of reading this one. A 64-page soft-cover book in the standard style for this series, and focussing on the period between 1956 and 1980.
So, lots of archive images, a section of colour artwork and some useful maps. Among the many photos and the colour artwork illustrate equipment of the Paraguayan armed forces, which include a variety of WW2 era aircraft that I think might well inspire modellers to try something a bit different. In terms of the story itself, following the Introduction, the first two sections describe the political situation in Paraguay, as well as the Armed Forces and their resources operated by the Paraguayan government. Then there are sections covering various guerrilla and opposition organisations who opposed the regime of General Stroessner, who used violence, kidnapping, and torture as well as military units to supress any opposition to him. There is also a detailed account of the assassination of the exiled Nicaraguan leader, Anastasio Somoza, in Paraguay.
I found this an interesting story of historical events that I was unfamiliar with, a story of a country controlled by a leader who was not afraid to use what many would describe as a vicious and repressive control over his country, in which many people simply 'disappeared'. An interesting addition to this Latin America @ War series, which I continue to enjoy.
Thanks to Helion & Co for our review copy.
