Title: Basic Guide to Modelling
Author: Stu Fone
Publisher: Key Publishing
ISBN: 978-1-80282-208-3
Another addition to the Key Publishing range of small format soft-cover books, this one groups together what was originally a series of features in Airfix Magazine with a guide for modelling beginners. A 96-page book, with the 12 chapters reflecting the original magazine features.
Very much aimed at the beginner, or perhaps the older modeller returning to the hobby after a long break. It is fair to say that there have been a lot of changes to the hobby over the last few years so this could help you catch up. From basic tools and equally the basic techniques for building vehicles, aircraft or ships there is plenty in here, all of course with photos to illustrate the main points. Some helpful notes on selecting colours, painting, removing seam lines applying transfers, weathering, scratch building small parts, research and more.
To coin a phrase, it does what it says on the cover. All the content is good, though some elements are rather brief. However, for the starter in our hobby it offers a good starting point of a wide selection of topics. For the experienced/advanced modeller not much to learn, but it is intended for beginners, which it does well.
