4-Wheeled Armoured Cars
...in Germany WW2
Title: 4-Wheeled Armoured Cars in Germany WW2
Author: Alan Ranger
Publisher: MMP Books
Number 21 in the Camera On series from MMP Books, more from the incredible collection of archive images from Alan Ranger. The now standard format for this series, the 80-page softcover book starts with 4-pages of text which provides the background to the photos and the basic story of the production and service of the different types.
The first of 8 groups of photos shows us the small Kfz 13, followed by the radio equipped version, the Sdkfz 14. These were the early designs, really just an armoured body on a standard car chassis. That changes as we get to their successors, the Sdkfz 221, which started off a series with a true armoured hull design, then the Sdkfz 222 which was the one that had a larger turret and was fitted with a 20mm main gun and saw widespread use on all fronts. Then the radio version, the Sdkfz 223, which went back to a smaller turret, armed with only an MG34 and fitted with a distinctive frame aerial. Then a couple of pages on the Sdkfz 247 Ausf B, a command vehicle that was only built in small numbers. The last few pages cover the final two cars, the unarmed radio/command cars, the Sdkfz 260 and 261.
Another excellent collection of archive images, and of course there are plenty of other vehicle types seen in company with the 4-wheel cars that are the main focus for this one. It is worth adding that there is so much more information held in the useful captions for every photo. I am a real fan of this Camera On series, and this one is no exception. I have no hesitation in recommending this one.
